On a vehicle with a manual transmission, the clutch is the hardest working part. With every gear change, it's engaging. This constant movement creates a lot of friction, and this is also why riding the clutch can be so damaging. When you add more pressure to the clutch, for example, by towing something, you cause more wear and tear. The team at West Erwin Auto Repair can provide proper maintenance services for this system.

Determining when to replace your clutch can be tricky. If you don't know much about the system, you probably feel just as confused about maintenance and replacement. Here are some things to remember if your clutch needs to be replaced:
It's easier to replace the whole system with a clutch kit than individual parts. A clutch kit includes a new or remanufactured clutch disc, pressure plate and release bearing. A kit is the best way to go because all of the parts are sourced from the same supplier and are matched so the installed height will be correct.
Clutch noise is usually caused by a bad release bearing, but it also can be caused by a bad pilot bushing. The bushing supports the tip of the transmission input shaft. This may or may not be included in a clutch kit, depending on the application.
The condition of the flywheel also is important. It must be clean, smooth and flat for proper clutch operation, and free of cracks. Resurfacing or replacement may be required.
Pay attention to your clutch and schedule a necessary replacement when things go wrong. This will keep your entire vehicle running smoothly for longer.
